What is a Prayer Board?
A visual prayer board is a collage of images, words, and scriptures that visualize what you are praying about. It’s something you create to display in a prominent place. Every time you see or read it, it’s a reminder to pray for the things God has placed on your heart for the world.
Through scripture, God makes it clear that we are here for the Kingdom, to manifest heaven on earth. Scripture says we are called not according to our works but according to God’s purpose and grace. By definition, purpose is the reason for which something exists. Why not just align yourself with the flow of God’s purpose for your very existence? Why not invite God, your creator, and shepherd into your planning process? Extending an invitation to God into your plans before the fact is a posture of surrender and that invitation is enough for the will of God to manifest in your life.
Why Have a Prayer Board?
Having a prayer board is so good to help you remember to pray, especially if you like the idea of having a visual reminder of your priorities. It can jog your memory on prayer requests that you haven’t prayed for in a while. Seeing your prayer board each day could be another aid in helping you build a daily habit of prayer. Most people don’t have the space for a prayer room, a war room, or an entire wall for prayer. But almost everyone has the space to hang a small prayer board on the wall. It may be a trend, but it’s not necessary for having a great prayer life.
Prayer Wall Idea
Alternatively, consider putting up a prayer wall at your church. This is a great idea to have up year round and watch as the prayers come in. Placing it in public or in an area with lots of space and foot traffic is ideal. No matter what, offer constant encouragement to your members to use it and make it a habit to celebrate the victories as often as possible!
Five Elements of Prayer
These five concepts are critical to focused prayers and fulfilling prayer work! As you create your prayer board, consider these five elements of prayer that can direct you step by step.
- Worship & Praise
- Gratitude & Thanksgiving
- Confession & Humility
- Blessings & Benedictions
- Requests & Supplications
Categories for your Prayer Board
P – Praise. Gratitude to God and love for who He is and what He’s already done should thread throughout every prayer.
R – Repentance. Expect prayer to expose where you’re still resisting Him.
A – Ask. Make your requests known.
Y – Yes. “All of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding ‘Yes’” (2 Corinthians. 1:20).
Big Prayers
Make a section of your prayer board specifically for big prayers. This can be something that might take years to reach, or an overall dream that you have. Big prayers are ones that might even seem impossible, but its important not to be discouraged and to continue praying for them.
People
This is a great section to include your family and friends names and even pictures. Pray for them by name each day or week. Everyone has people in their life that are important to them, so put their names up on your board, and let them be part of your prayers.
Headings
Practically, headings are a great way to divide your prayer board. Some people like to section off their prayer board, with sections for prayer requests, praises, people they are praying for, and other categories. This isn’t necessary, but can help a shared prayer board, like for a family, feel more organized.
Prayer Requests
Prayer requests are one of the most important parts of the prayer board, as most people use a prayer board to pray for their own requests and the needs of others. Many of the DIY prayer boards use index cards. Printable kits, like the ones linked below, usually include prayer request cards that you can print. What you write the prayer requests on can be as simple or as complex as you want.
Praise Reports
Answered prayers can be moved to a praise section list, or taken off the board to make room for new requests. Praises can be written on the same kind of index card. It’s a great reminder to see a list or pile of answered prayers to be encouraged to pray without ceasing.
Pictures
Including pictures of your family, friends or even just dreams that you have is a great way to decorate the board. Pictures are an excellent visual reminder, and it’s also nice to see pictures of loved ones every day.
How to Make Your Prayer Board
Set Your Intentions
Take a moment to reflect on your spiritual journey and personal aspirations. What do you hope to achieve through your prayer board and vision board? Clarify your intentions and set a clear focus for your board, maybe a theme or word you would like to focus on for the year as you create sections and visuals for your board.
Gather Your Materials
Collect supplies for your prayer board and vision board, including a corkboard or poster board, envelopes, printed images, push pins, scripture cards, quotes, markers, glue, and scissors. Choose materials that resonate with your aesthetic, theme, strong sense of belief and vision for the future.
Select Meaningful Images and Words
Read through the Word of God, books, and online resources to find images, quotes, and scripture verses that inspire and uplift you. Look for visuals that encourage prayer, positive emotions and align with your vision for your board.
Arrange and Affirm
Begin arranging your chosen collage of images, envelopes, words, and scriptures on your boards, paying attention to composition and layout. Get creative with colors, textures, and embellishments to make your boards visually appealing and reflective of your unique style. As you place each element, take a moment to affirm your intentions through prayer.
Infuse with Prayer and Intentions
As you place each element on your boards, take a moment to pray and set intentions for what you hope to come to pass in your life. Offer gratitude for blessings received and invite God’s guidance and direction in achieving your goals.Dedicate time each day to pray over your vision prayer board.
Visualize and Believe
Visualize yourself living out your dreams and aspirations as you gaze upon your vision prayer board. Allow yourself to fully embrace the possibility of what God has in store for you.
Use the ACTS prayer formula to organize your prayer board. Separate your prayer board into categories of Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Record “wow” moments and praises to God, write things you are sorry for, things you are grateful for, and people and situations that you want to bring before God.
Use “Help”, “Thanks”, and “Wow” to categorize your prayer board. Include prayers for others, yourself, and the world under category “help”. (What do you want God’s help with? Who in your life needs prayer?) Include gratitude under “thanks.” And include praise under “wow”: things about God and about the world that you find amazing, or things that you were impressed with.

- Include uplifting quotes, affirmations, and scripture verses that resonate with you.
- Incorporate photos of loved ones, inspirational images and colors that hold personal significance.
- Make a collage style prayer board. Write “Prayers” on the top of your prayer board (or the side of your refrigerator) and record prayers on notecards. Stick them to your prayer board with pins or magnets. Use different colors for prayer requests, answered prayers, gratitude, and any other categories you would like.
- Divide your prayer board into categories and make your headings. Include prayers for others, prayers for yourself, prayers for the world, thanksgiving, worries, and things you are sorry for (this could also be a “God please help me to…” prayer, e.g. be more patient, think before I speak, etc.). You can use note cards or post-its to record prayers. You can also cut out pictures and words from magazines and newspapers (include a collection of these in a little basket next to your prayer board).

Scripture to Help Your Prayers
It’s always important to pray and stay rooted in scripture and having scripture on your prayer board can help us to focus upon the truths of scripture and ensure our prayers remain focused upon God’s will. Some examples could be:
Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
1 John 5:14
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
1 Chronicles 16:11
“Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.”
James 5:13
“Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.”
Psalm 145:18
“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”
Jeremiah 29:12-13
“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Ephesians 6:18
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
