John and Dodie Osteen founded the church on Mother's Day 1959 in a converted feed store. Their son Joel Osteen took the pulpit in 1999 after his father's death and grew weekly attendance roughly fivefold, making Lakewood and its televised services one of the most recognized church brands in the world.
